The Start of a Summer Day

"Are you sure we want to do this?" I asked as I turned the alarm for 5:30 am on. Earlier this summer my group of friend and I made a summer bucket list for all the fun activities we wanted to do together this summer. Number 25 was "watch sunrise" and the empty check box challenged us to do it I brought my friend to my beach house in Miller Place Long Island which was near the beach on the north shore of Long Island. It was late the night before but we were determined to watch the sunrise.
I was in denial when I heard the first beep of my alarm. It was so dark. So early. And I was so tired. I managed to get myself out of bed and before I knew it I was walking down the beach path in the dark. I expected the air to be cold but the humidity of the August morning pressed against my skin. The air was so thick I could see it in the light of my phone flash light. Everything was silent except for my summer playlist playing off my big yellow speaker. With speaker and flashlight in hand we were finally at the beach. But this was not good enough. It's one thing to watch the sunrise from the beach; but you're  on a whole other level when you climb to up a path which has a beautiful view of the water from the side of a cliff
We walked quickly through the wooded trail, as I continued to look at the time. According to my weather app sunrise was at exactly 6:04 and it was currently 5:55! Fear that we would miss it built in the back of my mind. at 6:00 we finally got to the spot. it was an opening in the trees on the edge of the cliff. below was nothing but a steep slope but, above us were the vibrant colors symbolizing the start of a new day.

The sky was painted with an array of pinks and oranges making the water below look purple. It was beautiful and for a moment everything was still. The birds chirped in the trees above us and the waves crashed below. Looking out onto the horizon all the eye could see was the flow of the water and a small canoe about a mile offshore. As time went on it continued to get lighter and all I felt was a complete feeling of tranquility. I forgot about how tired I was, I forgot about how hungry I was, and most importantly I forgot about the rest of life's worries all I had to worry about was there and now.

We made our way back to our beach but part of me didn't want to go back up to the house. So, we sat on a towel for an hour and listened for our favorite songs as the warmth of the sun's light grew stronger on our skin. The waves continued to crash on the sand below our feet but we finally decided it was time to go to the house. And although we had a great time watching the sunrise we wnet back into our room and SLEPT.

Hours later (when we woke up) we took out our bucket list and crossed off "watch sunrise" feeling 100% accomplished.

Minutes before the sun rose

When the sun first started to peak through the clouds
This was sunset that same day. I just included it because I thought it was pretty :)
