International Day of Happiness by Maura O'Hare

The International Day of happiness was March 20, 2019. It is not just the first day of spring, but also a day to smile and spread happiness to all those around you. This day was established by The United Nations in 2012. It was first created as a reminder to us that happiness is an essential human goal and right. This year's theme, Happier Together, encourages people worldwide to focus on what we have in common, rather than what divides us. The tiny South Asian country of Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, thought to bring about this small holiday, because of the state of their country. Although the country is poor and seems to be struggling, with an average annual income of just $2,420, they consistently rank as one of the happiest countries in the world.

Bhutan is the only country in the world to use "Gross National Happiness,"a measurement of the collective happiness in a nation. The term was coined in 1972 by Bhutan's fourth Dragon King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. They choose to measure happiness, over Gross National Income, the total domestic and foreign output claimed by residents of a country. The concept has inspired a modern political happiness movement.

We have this country to thank as a role model for other nations, for they continue to inspire, mobilize, and advance the global happiness movement. They show us how we can and should focus more on the well being of the people in this world.
