What's Important to Me by Robert Scott

I feel like the obvious answers are friends and family, but that's also sort of a given, isn't it?  I'll always be appreciative of the people who are closest to me, but at the same time I want to write about something different from those same two subjects I would always write about during Thanksgiving in elementary school.  So, in turning away from something wholesome for something more fun, why not sports?  Well, sport.  I'm a bit of a one-trick pony.
I have been playing soccer for really as long as I can remember, which means a little bit less since my memory isn't very good, but I would like to say...pre-school?  Was that even a thing? I don't know, which is also pretty bad since I used to referee soccer games a year or two ago.  Either way, it's been a while, and I've gained quite a bit from it.
The first and most obvious thing that soccer has given me is somewhat regular exercise.  Half of the sport is just running around without the ball, which can be said for a lot of sports, but soccer is very cardio-based, so that has always helped me in that department.  Soccer has, also obviously, helped me gain better motor skills with my legs and feet, since, you know, the game is played with those.
  This is pretty redundant.
On a more cheesy side, soccer has allowed me to make many friends and acquaintances over the years.  It's pretty crazy that so many different people can be brought together by one common interest.  With so many different people, soccer has also taught me how to use teamwork and different forms of leadership to work towards a certain goal.  Someone tells you to get into position or go up for a corner kick; you move.  You tell someone they are out of position or that they need to watch for something; they listen.  That sort of thing.
Soccer is one of my favorite pastimes, whether it be watching it or playing it, and I'm glad that it's been part of my life for so long.  I hope I'll be able to continue to play it even into adulthood, not professionally (not that high of an expectation), but most likely something like Sunday League.

  1. Nice work - you can definitely play into adulthood! I played softball until just a few years ago and I only stopped because my kids' schedules were too busy.
