What is a hero? By Nuala Hynes

What is a hero? It is someone who wears a cape and stops trains from going off the rails. But can it also be something as simple as saving the last slice of pizza for your hungry sister? Most everyone is a hero at some point in their life, whether they are a big or small hero. For example, my sister is a hero to me because she is a role model in academics for both my sister and I. She shows us that hard work can get us the grades we want/need. My parents are both heroes because they are role models but they also show their children valuable life lessons. In class, we have tried to define what a hero is. I think that everyone has a different definition of what a hero is. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of a hero is:
a. "a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability"
b. "an illustrious warrior"
c. "a person admired for achievements or noble qualities"
d. "one who shows great courage"
But I don't think this definition includes all types of heroes. Anyone can be a hero without having courage or without any major achievements or even being a mythological figure. Heroes can be anything depending on perspective. My sister is a hero because she saved the last piece of pizza for me after a long track meet. Small or big, a hero is a hero.
