Surrounded by Heros and Heroines - Kelly Zukowski

One of the units I did in English class this year was about heroes and heroines. However, the main thing that made me very intrigued about the subject is when a person said that everyone goes through a journey (or journies) like a hero. At first glance, would I count any of my classmates a hero? No, but as I started thinking about it more and more, I figured out that some of these people have had a prominent influence on my life and hyperbolically saved my life on certain occasions.

Forget an assignment? Didn’t do or understand the homework? When this happens to a student, it can bring tons of dread and panic not knowing what to do to solve this situation. However, there will always be some student that will come running to help others who face such a predicament. Whether it be reminding a student of a due date, helping with homework or working on an assignment. There is even a joke at our school where a DBQ is also known as “Death By Question” so my classmates do save someone’s "life" by reminding them or giving them tips on how to do the assignment.

Particularly in our school, no one is left to eat alone or hang out by themselves. By the time that someone walks into this school, they become a friend of one of the students in the building.  I also see this as heroism because my classmates immediately stop someone from being lonely and sad.

Peer-review is a saving grace when at school. Unsure of how you wrote something? Not sure if you got the right answer? A classmate can save the day by just looking over your class assignment. Some classmates when they do not know the answer themselves, start calling others to come and help. Before you know it, ten of your classmates will be trying to solve the problem that you had trouble doing.

It is important to note that a majority of students at this school have an outstanding sense of humor. Now you may be asking, why does being funny make someone a hero? The answer to that is quite simple actually. Not everyone comes into school all happy and ready to work. There might be people in school that are having a bad day, and a simple joke can make their day. A sense of humor also allows people who are new to the school to feel included.

That is why I view my friends and students at the school as heroes, as they go out of their way to make my life and others better. Afterall, I do not know of any student in this school who acts like the Grinch, wakes up to ruin everyone’s day and helps no one with anything.
