In today's society, there are two major perspectives between fate and destiny. One being is that if something is meant to happen it will.
For example, in Oedipus the King, his fate had been predetermined since birth, and he lacked individual freedom of choice. Oedipus took multiple precautions to avoid his fate. Which was that he would kill his father and end up marrying his mother. This caused him to leave his home to protect whom he thought were his parents. This didn't matter because he ultimately married his mother, while at the same time taking the life of his father. No matter how hard Oedipus tried, he couldn't avoid his destiny that he had been given.
The second perspective is that one's decisions throughout their lifetime, will alter and change the path they follow.
In "The Minority Report" by Philip K. Dick, John Anderton's system revealed that he would be responsible for committing murder on another human being. This puzzled Anderton because he had no intention on doing so. Anderton had individual freedom of choice where he could decide to either pay the consequences of killing Leopold Kaplan, or not follow through meaning his system had failed, making his program unsuccessful. After weighing these actions, Anderton decided to murder Kaplan so that his system is deemed successful and can keep his job, rather than suffer a future where his life work has been a waste. By doing this Anderton's destiny came true only because he was able to choose how he wanted to continue with his life.
Two totally different perspectives, but I don't think that one is more correct than the other, it all depends upon the obstacle one is faced with.
I totally agree with your views on this topic, Becs! I also like the bit on how this applies to relationships, because I totally agree! Things like that should never be forced!!
