For this unit, we read Antigone and Oedipus the King, by Sophocles. The main topic for both these Greek dramas are indisputable destinies and taking charge of fate. After reading these stories, I've started to think if all of us have a destiny and/or fate or if humankind has a destiny. Are our lives planned ahead of our birth? If so, by who? Are we able to change it? I'd hope that's not the case, having a superior something knowing what is there to come in my life. It probably sounds crazy, I know, but think of it. From the very beginning of the universe, The Big Bang, every impossible circumstance happened for that specific event to be possible. The asteroid that separated a floating rock to become the Earth and the Moon. What if the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs missed? There wouldn't be us. If it weren't for these tiny things to happen billions and millions of years ago, we wouldn't be here. Everything happens for a reason. Every action has a reaction and that reaction can cause something else. Maybe our fate is predetermined. Or maybe it's all a big coincidence. Whatever it is, I don't think we have the power of taking charge of what happens to us. Unfortunately, only fate can determine that (at least in my mind). Even thinking about this hurts my brain. Ouch.
